Twitter suspends 125,000 ISIS-related accounts

Twitter has revealed that it suspended at least 125,000 ISIS-related accounts – Twitter has revealed that it suspended at least 125,000 ISIS-related accounts in what it termed operation “Combating Violent Extremism”. According to Twitter:“Like most people around the world, we are horrified by the atrocities perpetrated by extremist groups. We condemn the use of Twitter to promote terrorism and the Twitter Rules make it clear that this type of behavior, or any violent threat, is not permitted on our service.

…As the nature of the terrorist threat has changed, so has our ongoing work in this area. Since the middle of 2015 alone, we’ve suspended over 125,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.”

Twitter’s revelation was further broadcasted by other prominent news media such as CBS News, BBC News, CNN, etc. The internet hackers group, Anonymous, recently succeeded in deleting over 4,500 IS-related account across social network. We wrote about it, tagging it “Anonymous versus ISIS”.

Twitter further added that it will continue to do all within it’s power to zwart the terrorist activities of those who have chosen to use it’s service as a means of perpetrating their terrorist acts. Twitter said that it plans to increase the size of the teams that manages and reviews report. Twitter also promise to continue co-operating with law enforcement entities when necessary.

“Our efforts have not stopped there. We have increased the size of the teams that review reports, reducing our response time significantly. We also look into other accounts similar to those reported and leverage proprietary spam-fighting tools to surface other potentially violating accounts for review by our agents. We have already seen results, including an increase in account suspensions and this type of activity shifting off of Twitter.”

Meanwhile, ISIS and their followers are said to have switched from Twitter to Telegram, an App that was developed in Berlin. The app was developed by Pavel and Nikolai Durov in 2013. Since ISIS started using Telegram, it presently has over 15 thousands followers.

It could be very good if all the social media should work together and contribute to the war on terror.

It can be recalled that the group which goes by the name “Anonymous” recently waged a social networking war against ISIS when it announced its “biggest operation ever” against IS under the banner #OpParis, promising to take down IS websites and social media accounts used to disseminate propaganda and recruit jihadists.

More than 5,500 Twitter accounts have already been taken down as a result of the campaign and IS who could not identify Anonymous ended up calling them “idiots.”
